Overseas Alumni Association of Dalian University of Technology
New England Alumni Meet DUT President |
Dear Alumni:
DUT President Cheng GengDong visited Boston from Dec.9 to Dec 11.
Thanks to the great organizational effort of Dr. Liu RuiMing, Professor of University of
Massachusetts at Boston, about a dozen local alumni gathered in Boston's Ming Garden
Friday evening to welcome President Cheng and Prof. Yuan YiJun, Director of Economic
Research Center of School of Management at DUT.
During the gathering, President briefed alumni on DUT's recent development and news.
DUT made good strikes in getting outside funding. President Cheng
is very confident that with continued efforts, DUT will be among some of the front runners
in Chinese Universities as far as research funding is concerned. Detailed
information cannot be disclosed since the competition for government funding is very
intensive. There are a few ranking systems in China that rank universities
every year. DUT was runked 11th, 10th, 15th at times by different
ranking organizations. President Cheng said, DUT is within top 15~30 ranges among
all the universities in China by any ranking.
So far, DUT has nine Academicians and Members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and
Engineering. Sixteen DUT graduates are Academicians and Members
of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Engineering, in addition to 17 Acamedician
and Members (of the two Academies) who were former DUT faculties.
President Cheng said that he welcomes each and every support from alumni, especially
overseas alumni . DUT faces some challenges in the number of scientific/engineering papers
to be published overseas. President Cheng encourages overseas alumni help
DUT on the following:
1. Help professors review and polish their English papers for publication. Other
Universities in China have already done so, and it was very effective. This is
much needed.
2. Help DUT professors in directing their research. Now, there are about 30 overseas
alumni in the rank of Professors in universities abroad. He sincerely hope
that these professors have active collaborations with DUT professors.
3. President Cheng invites all home-visiting alumni to give academic presentations at DUT.
4. Found raising. He indicated that the influence of Overseas Alumni Fund in
DUT is invaluable. Each dollar donated to DUT has made some great difference in
changing a student's life and career. He said DUT truly appreciates all the
fund-raising efforts by overseas alumni, and the special efforts made by Alumni Wang Jun,
Gu ZhiHao, Jim Yang and Zhang JiGuang
who were the Fund Chairs. Basically, as Dr. Wang XiaoGang said, if DUT are strong,
alumni feel strong. Every penny donated, in return, will make alumni more
glorious.
5. Help DUT develop its Web Site using state-of-the-art Technologies and host the site in
the States. He praised the efforts by Lu Ming Liang, Lei Jiang, Wang
WenHua, Zhu DongPing and other team members.
6. DUT welcomes any suggestions from alumni. The DUT leadership is very open to
suggestions and critics.
President Cheng thanks those alumni who attended the Boston Gathering and those who called
or tried to reach him. He appreciated all the excellent suggestions by alumni
during the meeting.
